Canadian eclectic metal artist Devin Townsend will return to Australia in November, just in case you didn’t already have enough gigs lined up that month with Paramore, Bloc Party and Interpol, and Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls.

Dubbed a “genius, an eccentric mastermind, an orchestrator, and a comedian all rolled into one,” Townsend’s body of work is formidable – from the raw intensity of Strapping Young Lad to the otherworldly beauty of Ocean Machine, from Infinity to The Devin Townsend Project, from the tranquillity of Casualties Of Cool to the wild universe of Ziltoid, Devin Townsend is an artist who doesn’t stop creating.

Promoting his new progressive metal album Lightwork, Townsend will also bring out some old-school classics when Aussie fans catch him at Perth’s Magnet House on Wednesday, 8 November, Melbourne’s Forum on Friday, 10 November, Sydney’s Metro Theatre on Saturday, 11 November, and Brisbane’s Tivoli on Sunday, 12 November.

Tickets go on sale on Thursday, 13 July, at 9 am AEST via The Phoenix.

Kill Your Stereo reviewed Townsend’s 25th album, Empath, in 2019, which we called his most “mind-blowing effort to date”.

Empath is something special that I urge everyone to check out, especially those who aren’t particularly into metal,” Kill Your Stereo’s review continued. “To deny the insane amount of musical talent shown on Empath would be to reject reality.

“If the progressive and metal communities were to create some sort of time capsule for future ears, made up of the scene's greatest artistic achievements, you can bet Empath would rightfully earn such a spot.”

Townsend’s most recent Australian stop, in September 2019, resulted in an epic three-and-a-half-hour show at Melbourne’s Thornbury Theatre.

Keeping 700 punters spellbound, Townsend played stripped-back acoustic versions of his genre-smashing tunes and even offered Q&A sections during the show, giving invaluable advice to young artists (and, indeed, parents).

The Music’s review concluded, “Tonight is a rare, raw glimpse into the mind, soul and life of an individual with endless creativity and talent - a deep-thinking, switched on and philosophical mind with so much to give to the world.”
