Live Review: The Presets, Eves Karydas, Priscilla

"The room was moving as one thriving mess, bodies pulsating rhythmically to the beat."

More The Presets More The Presets

It had been a warm day and looked like it was shaping up to be the perfect night to spend at The Ice Cream Factory. However, no one was quite prepared for the heat that The Presets would bring to the table.

Perth band Priscilla opened the night in the main room with their dreamy indie-synth-pop. The beginning of their set seemed plagued with mixing issues (a little too bass heavy), which meant you couldn't hear lead singer Priscilla Gardner's gorgeous vocals clearly. Once that had been sorted out, the rest of the set went well. They were a fun band to watch and have some catchy tunes.

Eves Karydas was up next. Seriously, if you haven't had the chance to check her out as yet, do yourself a favour and go see her when she tours again in February. She has a stunning voice and puts on a great show. She did raise a good point too; “If this is the Ice Cream Factory, is there an ice cream store?” Shame there wasn't. It would have made good money last night!

The first two acts definitely helped to raise the temperature in the warehouse but no one quite expected the heat as we waited impatiently for The Presets. It didn't help either that times were pushed back 40 minutes. By the time they came on stage, every single person in that room was dripping in sweat... and then they opened with Talk Like That and Ghosts.

It was a sold-out show so bodies were crammed in. Just when we thought it couldn't get any hotter, they played This Boy's In Love, My People and Are You The One?. The room was moving as one thriving mess, bodies pulsating rhythmically to the beat, and the joy on everyone's face was as clear on their glistening faces. If you were lucky enough to be standing near a fan it gave some respite, but there weren't nearly enough in the place.

Unfortunately, it was all too soon before The Presets played their last song Until The Dark. “Thank you, Perth! You guys have been fantastic!” They walked off stage and the lights came on. Lights on is usually a sign that the show is over but the crowd screamed for more. It looked like The Presets wanted to give more too but unfortunately, due to the late start, it seemed they had hit curfew. It was only when the DJ came on that the crowd collectively sighed with resignation and walked out into the cool night air. We may have been upset that we couldn't have more Presets but everyone was grateful for that blast of fresh air.

Once again, The Presets put on another brilliant performance. Sure, we were all drenched with our own sweat, and the sweat of everyone around us, and the heat was almost unbearable, but let's face it, every person in that room would do it over again and again.
