Live Review: RUFUS, Hayden James, Crooked Colours

Belting out recent hits, Perth's openers Crooked Colours left quite a mark on the punters perched around the grassy banks of Fremantle Arts Centre.

Hayden James followed with a DJ set that truly got the party started. He played mostly house remixes and of course his own hits such as the popular triple j tune, Permission To Love. Moody visuals with a nature theme accompanied James' set, reflecting the melodies flowing throughout.

The lights dimmed and Rufus came on, causing a sudden euphoria all through the venue. They began with Modest Life and continued with hits Sundream, Rendezvous and Imaginary Air. Behind them was a light structure in a half trapezium shape with rows of lights changing colour, adding another hint of cool to an already flawless performance.

They then proceeded down memory lane, playing some of their old songs such as Talk To Me and This Summer. They appreciated the crowd, calling us the “coolest cats out there”. With Rufus, it doesn't matter what mood you're in, they've got something for every occasion. During one song, synth player/percussionist Jon George climbed the scaffolding and belted it out on the harmonica, sending the crowd into a rush to find their phones to get this picture-perfect moment. They ended their set with Take Me, giving the audience a chance to recite the chorus. After what seemed to be the quietest encore chant ever witnessed, Rufus came out and finished with their cover of Foals and Booka Shade's My Number/Charlotte and Desert Night.
