Audience participation is a big part of the show but it rarely becomes awkward or uncomfortable, this is largely due to Kim Huong being such a dominant, over-the-top character that draws most of the focus throughout the show.

Framed within the context of a book launch Q&A session, Phil and Me is the story of stereotypical Vietnamese mum Kim Huong (Diana Nguyen) on a journey to find her lost son Phi. She sings, dances and punches her way toward her goal while dragging the crowd along with her every step of way.

Steve McPhail does an admirable job playing a variety of characters but they are mostly there to play toward Nguyen and her overbearing “Dragon Mum”.
Phil and Me deals mostly in ethnic stereotypes to get its laughs but there is something charming and truthful about the characters that elevates the show to something special.
