Perri Cassie: Channel Perri (MICF)

20 April 2017 | 4:47 pm | Andrew Giddings

"A fun and relatable hour of stories and observations from a mouthpiece for Melbourne millennials"

Perri Cassie's material is mostly self-deprecating, flowing from the comedy goldmine of his low self-esteem. He does have enough self-esteem, however, to know that he has less self-esteem than you — figure that one out. His common millennial experiences of economic hopelessness and dating app addictions are painfully relatable and a massive inspiration for his shtick.

Perri opens his act by signing an increasing number of ridiculous props to give to members of the front row. This 30-second skit breaks the ice early and from then on, he maintains a comfortable rapport with his audience.

Cassie's other source of material is the occasional unexpected absurd story. One of the greatest laughs of the night came from a story about his time working at the lay by counter at Big W. As revenge on a customer who caused him to stay back late, he ejaculated in the slippers she had purchased. Stories like these came out of left field and managed to keep his set exciting and engaging, if not a little bit of an overshare.

Perri never has the crowd in stitches, but he does manage to be consistently funny throughout his entire hour set without a single lull. His material is strong enough to keep the audience laughing from topic to topic, and for my money, I'd take a consistently funny comic over one with drastic ups and downs any day.

Channel Perri is a fun and relatable hour of stories and observations from a mouthpiece for Melbourne millennials. Peri doesn't disappoint, his material is strong and his confidence in front of a crowd make it a slick experience. Definitely one to catch.

Perri Cassie presents Channel Perri till 23 Apr at The Unknown Union, part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
