More Lower Dens More Lower Dens

Jana Hunter’s vocals continue to mesmerise on Lower Dens’ third record.

Taking a sidestep from krautrock leanings to a more ethereal New Wave groove, Escape From Evil sees the Baltimore quartet embrace coy synth (Electric Current) and moody emotional chagrin (I Am The Earth). Yet there’s a steely resolve to Hunter that remains resolute throughout – her siren vocals sound out of the velvet darkness. When she sings “I’m not crying/I’m just glad to be alive” on lead single To Die In L.A., it’s a euphoric moment in an album full of them.
