Album Review: Kardajala Kirridarra - Kardajala Kirridarra

In months (and years) to come, an endless parade of journalists will likely ruminate on the significance of Kardajala Kirridarra - a rising collective of Indigenous female musicians fighting the many barriers of Australia's heavily stratified and discriminatory music industry (and society) with a fusion of traditional and populist music.

For the moment, suffice it to say that their self-titled debut album is beautiful, expressive, unique, elegant, hypnotic and heartbreaking. Swathed in layers of vocal harmonies, Kardajala Kirridarra sidesteps any muzak or worldbeat cliches with just enough electronic textures to expand their deeply evocative songwriting. It's simply a fantastic record.
