"This set from the UK musical genius that is Jamie xx, is the one to beat for 2016. "

More Jamie xx More Jamie xx

Melbourne-born and -based DJ and producer Tornado Wallace (aka Lewie Day) began his all-vinyl set with mostly ambient, minimal, almost disjointed tracks to a room that was almost pitch black, aside from a couple of deep blue neon stage lights. This is a man with exceptionally intricate taste in music, who has spent some time living on the other side of the world in Berlin, so you’d be naïve to expect a set anything other than a little bit weird. Towards the end of his performance, he played a little more old school disco tracks, finishing off with incredibly moody, exotic jungle house tunes.

Popping up on stage around ten minutes after scheduled start time, UK producer, remixer and DJ, Jamie xx walked on stage to an absolutely rapturous audience. He was incredible from the get-go, playing a tribal remix of Higher Places, followed by the precious, delicate, masterful gem that is Sleep Sound, causing hairs to stand on end and goose bumps to form all over — this track was even better live. He switched effortlessly between funky, playful tunes, with Swedish producer HNNY’s Trummor to grungy, really bass heavy techno beats like Paranoid London’s Eating Glue that were also still irresistibly upbeat and danceable.

Every song sounded like organically crafted perfection to the ears, and the colour-changing light show was timed impeccably, with shades of blue, green, pink, yellow and purple, shining onto the two enormous disco balls on the roof and projecting a starry display of lights onto the walls and ceilings above.

Crowd favourite garage-referencing All Under One Roof Raving completely shone towards the end of his set, with everyone in the audience up in arms, he followed through with sophisticated, wistful techno, and surprised us by playing Radiohead’s eerily haunting Everything In Its Right Place. He rounded up with the deeply personal and highly original anthem that is Gosh, followed by Good Times, after the crowd demanded an encore. This set from the UK musical genius that is Jamie xx, is the one to beat for 2016.
