History is written by the victors. Or, at least, by those who declare themselves victorious. Within the pages of the past and between the lines, however, holds the beautiful, empowering truth - and Gillian English is here to prove it.

Ascending the stage in Shakespearean garb and assailing the role of Queen Margaret of Anjou, the bold and brazen Canadian seeks to undo an age of slanderous propaganda squared at a 13th century badass. A born leader, dedicated mother and ersatz feminist icon, Queen Margaret is a victim to one of the most prolific villains of all time - a white man with a pen.

English’s portrayal of the figure is both heartwarmingly genuine and hilariously authentic - all while maintaining her trademark Novo Scotian drawl. Taking the position of Queen Margaret in a modern day Hell, English uses her extensive knowledge and whip-smart humour in tandem to create a glorious hour of clever and thought-provoking comedy.

There’s a particular genius in the way English abstains from an accurate and nuanced portrayal of the character. The pointed allegories and connections to modern day sexism in She Wolf showcase the true feelings of English herself with tremendous hilarity. She’s angry at the world, and rightly so: in over half a millennium, not much has changed on that front. Pair this with the unfavourable and inaccurate caricature of the queen from a certain famous William and what comes together is a phenomenally powerful message about the treatment of women in media, and the world in general.

English is one of the most interesting and high-concept performers going around, and is going above and beyond to educate and entertain her audience in equal measure.
