Live Review: FKA Twigs, DJ Levins

To those in the crowd who spent majority of the time filming this incredible show on their smartphones, shame on you.

More FKA twigs More FKA twigs

The wait for FKA Twigs feels like an eternity tonight.

While DJ Levins does a bang-up job of keeping Sydney entertained, his set runs nearly 90 minutes and by the end of it, there are plenty of restless bodies more than ready for the main act to hit the stage.

When FKA Twigs finally emerges, a combination of raised smartphones and excited screams greet her. She’s intense as she moves across the stage; all motion, her focus and devouring stare barely wavers.

The diminutive singer performs a mix of her acclaimed album LP1 and earlier work, each track moving in a slightly different direction to that of the recordings. Lights On is a stand-out, particularly the stripped-back, a cappella she delivers at the end, while Number and Papi Pacify are devilishly good.

Twigs live is something you need to completely immerse yourself in.

Twigs breaks out some killer dance moves tonight, garnering massive cheers from the crowd. Most of us are just mesmerised though ‘cause let’s face it, if we tried to flail our limbs about that way, it wouldn’t be anywhere near as sexy. Be honest, guys.

As the set nears its end, Twigs adorably acknowledges the crowd and introduces us to her band. She comes across as a total sweetheart. As if we weren’t crushing on you enough already, girl?

The last round of songs includes Video Girl and Two Weeks, the latter utterly pulsating, but she unexpectedly finishes with How’s That, off the EP2 record. An obscure choice but as we realised long ago, Twigs is not one to deliver the norm or the expected. And to those in the crowd who spent majority of the time filming this incredible show on their smartphones, shame on you. Twigs live is something you need to completely immerse yourself in. And boy did some of us immerse tonight.
