Live Review: Innerspace: Felicity Groom, The Long Lost Brother, Cam Avery

The Innerspace Sunday evenings of live music at Geisha have been happening for a while at the nightclub venue, and they work well. It's a good looking place with its array of visual art, red velvet curtains and planetary cluster of mirror balls over the dancefloor, and not somewhere non-nightclubbers would usually get a look at. This particular evening was one of collaboration, Felicity Groom joining support act Cam Avery to sing a sad but sparkling cover of Leonard Cohen's Chelsea Hotel #2. Avery returned the favour to help sing back-up on Groom's Finders & Keepers; and Andrew Ryan of second-act-up TLLB played guitar in Groom's band.

After Avery stepped down, Ryan took the stage in a cloud of dry ice, followed soon after by the rest of The Long Lost Brothers. They played a full, rocky set, finishing up with RTRFM fave Snakes & Ladders. After that, briefly interrupting Cameron George of Usurper Of Modern Medicine's DJ set, came the impetus for the gig: the launch of new videos from both headlining bands. It was a stark contrast – the silly and playful video for China by The Long Lost Brothers, followed by the simple and visually arresting clip for Felicity Groom's Trophy Wife. George finished up after that, and then Groom took the stage alone, to be joined by her band by the second song. Her set started slow but picked up momentum as it went. Groom is almost serpentine in her movements and intensity and the set was a captivating finish to an overall enjoyable gig.
