Live Review: Divine Fits & The Delta Riggs

'Supergroup' Divine Fits toed the line between mediocre and good when they took a break from the Laneway Festival juggernaut to play a much more intimate show. Support band The Delta Riggs definitely look the part of a rock band with shaggy-mop hair and tight jeans, and then you hear them and realise they have the credentials to match. The lead singer shimmied his hips as he sung at the front of the stage, clearly getting into the groove of the music. Though not to everyone's taste, The Delta Riggs played a solid and entertaining set that owed largely to their confidence as musicians. Their more bluesy numbers were their strength while their other tracks were catchy but just not as original.

There was an excited anticipation as Divine Fits took to the stage. They kicked off with an ambient and moody number, then smoothly moved into an up-tempo track that showed promise for the rest of the night. The American/Canadian crew were at their finest when tracks had bite with powerful guitar overlays and metallic drums. Other songs fell flat with dull lyrics and melodies and only garnered a polite reaction from the crowd. It also didn't help that the speakers began to crackle mid-set.

Divine Fits, however, were as humble as a band could get, in spite of their impressive line-up. It made you really root for them to be great but unfortunately it was just too uneven.
