Anyone who has seen one of David O'Doherty's numerous Gala or showcase appearances will be aware that the Irish funny man does musical comedy like no other. What some fans of the comic may not know is that O'Doherty also has the stand-up chops to rival any other working comedian in the business.

Wandering onto the stage completely unannounced, it takes the crowd a quick moment to realise that O'Doherty isn't a member of the tech crew (as his outfit may beg to differ). His big cheesy smile is instantly spread like wildfire across the room, and O'Doherty and his casio dream-machine begin on their quest to change the world. His tunes are as perplexingly catchy as always - his timbre of suddenly switching from singing to talking garnering many a deserving laugh.

When O'Doherty puts down the keyboard, he can still deliver on the comedy in an inspired way. Joking about fake twitter sponsorship and the naming process of "Those candles that go out when you blow them and then come back on" is ridiculous and hilarious. Pure, unadulterated O'Doherty.

Big Time is another hit for O'Doherty. Gags land with precision and his crowd work is superb. Melbourne have unofficially adopted him as one of our own, and even though he only visits once a year, he's always welcomed back like one of the family.

David O'Doherty presents Big Time, till 23 Apr at Forum Theatre, part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
