A New Testament is sweet, almost saccharine, but Owens is endlessly endearing.

More Christopher Owens More Christopher Owens

There’s an overarching hopefulness to former Girls member Christopher Owens’ work.

Whether lamenting heartbreak or wishful thinking, everything in the lilting pitchiness of his voice and heart-on-sleeve lyricism has the air of a man throwing all his cards onto the table. A New Testament sees this optimism take shape in gospel-tinged Nothing More Than Everything To Me and the twanging country guitars on Key To My Heart. Stand-out song Never Wanna See That Look Again is rhythmically sharp, smoothed out with his doleful voice. A New Testament is sweet, almost saccharine, but Owens is endlessly endearing.
