Chris Dewberry: Let's Agree To Disagree (MICF)

"A laundry list of things Chris Dewberry finds bizarre, confusing and pointless."

Chris Dewberry sure does seem to think a lot of things are crazy. Monogamy is crazy. Hipsters are crazy. All of India is crazy. Endearing verbal tick or not, Dewberry's latest show Let's Agree To Disagree is a laundry list of things he finds bizarre, confusing and pointless.

Dewberry's show is intimate, the setting low budget, but with his genuinely affable vibe he manages to give everyone a laugh worth making the trip. Not every joke landed for every member of the audience. Certain material seemed to get a better response from some people rather than others. I'd say that most likely comes down to the comic not having a clear target audience. The age range of the show-goers varied greatly, which meant that his material at the expense of hipsters landed better with the older crowd and his jokes about monogamy were better received by the younger members. Everyone who attended had something to laugh at, but not necessarily at the same time.

Dewberry stumbled occasionally when discussing current affairs but hit his stride when working off his personal stories. While telling a story about how he was brazenly propositioned by a male tour guide in India he seemed at his most effortlessly funny. But his strong personal material was interrupted as he moved to the occasional political bit. The jokes were still funny, but they lacked the same confidence he found when talking about himself.

Dewberry knows that some of his material is objectionable, after all he did name his show Let's Agree To Disagree. He even refers to himself as "divisive" on stage after making a pedophilia joke that treads very close to the line. He never goes too far, however, making sure most of his jokes stay within the realm of the acceptable while giving those boundaries a mighty fine push.

Chris Dewberry has something for everyone. You might not guffaw at every line but there's certainly a few bits in the mix for almost any comedy fan. Check him out at Basement Cafe during the Melbourne Comedy Festival.
