Live Review: Addicted To Bass: Bombs Away, Kid Kenobi, Ace Basik, Wastelands, JS

The launch of Ministry Of Sound's new Addicted To Bass series at Villa last weekend provided a night of commercial house, electro and dubstep, flitting with some heavy basslines from two of this country's most popular artists. Drum'n'bass, electro and dubstep were all mashed into one for a sold-out crowd, which saw the venue crammed by 11pm. Ace Basik started the night off in proper fashion with a somewhat chilled beginning, although it didn't take long for all to realise that not only you but everyone else around you were dancing to the upbeat tracks. Wastelands hit the decks next and upped the electrosphere by playing harder and heavier beats mixed with well-known commercial songs. Bombs Away then followed and onto the stage they came wearing some outlandish monkey/gorilla hats. Combined with the fact they were joined by DJ buddy Kronic, it both confused and entertained the crowd. Monkeys, gorillas or whatever they were wearing, it didn't really matter though because one thing was for certain: Bombs Away knew how to interact with the crowd upping the already pumping atmosphere with tracks like Supersoaker, Swagger and Big Booty Bitches. An attempted crowd surf-come-stage dive did sour proceedings a little, but all was forgotten when Kid Kenobi took to the stage, turned the commercial down and upped the bass music ante with mixes from the likes of Nero and 360, his own remix of TJR's Face Melt, and his willingness to chuck in a bit of d'n'b proving a highlight. The skill and class of Kenobi clearly out-shone that of everyone else as he smoothly transitioned between any number of genres. Although he's a legend around these parts, it was sad to see a fair chunk of crowd leave after what one can only assume was the reason they came – Perth boys Bombs Away have certainly become a commercial force to be reckoned with. Following Kenobi, JS showed plenty of class in keeping late-goers' addicition to...bass fulfilled.
