As vocalist Brian Fair roars the first lines of the title track to ‘We Ain’t Leavin’ Till You’re Bleedin”, you’ll be hard pressed not to sit up and take notice. By utilising elements of hardcore punk and metal (and by having a couple of metal veterans with hardcore roots to implement them) Death Ray Vision have struck a vibe that makes the most of both styles.

‘WALTYB’ may only run for under half an hour but it dominates from beginning to end, making use of its short song lengths and getting to the point quickly with no messing around. Each track, whether it lasts 30 seconds or three minutes, is bursting with aggression and attitude. Each note sung, every chord hit; it’s all oozing with energy. This comes as no surprise since the band is made up of members from Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage and ex-members of Cannae and Overcast. Injecting power into their performances must come as second nature for these guys.

The hybrid style that Death Ray Vision has come up with makes for a lot of interesting twists and turns. One minute you’ll be presented with frantic punk sections, the next you’ll be hearing soaring melodic choruses reminiscent of early Trivium. All the riffs are fresh and awesome, pairing superbly with Fair‘s harsh, guttural roars. There’s even a handful of ripping guitar solos on offer that make a brilliant addition to the mix.

‘WALTYB’ is short and sweet and will leave a lasting impression on anyone who considers themselves a fan of hardcore punk and/or heavy metal. Pick it up now, you will not be disappointed.

Conclusion

Death Ray Vision’s ‘We Ain’t Leavin’ Till You’re Bleedin” is a fun and energetic foray into some heavy metal-inspired hardcore punk. With an interesting mix of members from notable metal and hardcore bands, the resulting style is fantastic. If you’re a fan of either genre you need to do yourself a favour and hear this album.
