An impressive batch of aggressive, impassioned hardcore.

There's an immediate sense of dread present on Adelaide hardcore outfit Reactions' new 7”, 'Out of the Dark'. We're introduced with pounding, regimented drums and a clean guitar line that brings with it immense foreboding. The sinister mood is soon juxtaposed by the stark vulnerability in frontman Lachy Pitcher's opening declaration - “I'm scared of the fucking world”.

Throughout the six tracks that make up 'Out of the Dark' the South Australian quintet craft a healthy serving of aggressive, fast-paced and metallic-tinged hardcore that does little to stray too far from conventions of the genre, but is nevertheless defiant in its conviction.

The likes of 'Sacrifice' and title track 'Out of the Dark' proudly demonstrate a penchant for crushing breakdowns and shouted gang vocal refrains. It's delivered with formidable passion and intensity, even if the 7” can at times feel like a portrait of a band finding their feet by treading familiar ground.

To the band's credit, however, there's still a fairly strong feeling of authenticity and sincerity scattered among the 7”, not to mention a reassuring confidence. Given that the band's median age is around the 18 mark, it's pretty damn impressive how tight Reactions sound as a unit sonically, meshing together cohesively while each displaying prowess as musicians in their own right.

Ultimately, 'Out of the Dark' is a very solid effort from the band that sees them simultaneously taking observant cues from their forefathers and providing flourishes of their own honest and resonant take on things. Don't expect to be blown away by ingenuity, but rather revel in the sheer energy and refreshing tenacity to be found in spades.
