Get your wigga on…
From the label that gave the world
such gems as “Punk Goes Acoustic” and “Punk Goes 80’s” comes
the latest Fearless endorsed novelty release, “Punk Goes Crunk”.
Apart from the fact that the word crunk fucking sucks (seriously, listing

your band’s genre on MySpace as “crunk” is neither ironic or witty)
this CD is actually a pretty enjoyable, tongue in cheek listen.
Not every song on a compilation
album is going to be a hit, but the quality of the covers that have
been contributed by bands like All Time Low more than make up
for the mediocrity of someone like The Escape Frame.
Kicking things off is Set Your
Goals over the top rendition of “Put Yo Hood Up”. I’m not
sure how impressed Lil Jon would be with the cover version but
whatever… the song is hilarious. Considering “I Got Your Money”
was originally penned by Ol’ Dirty Bastard, it’s fairly amusing
to hear Alternative Press cover stars Say Anything rocking a
cover version, although they do a rather impressive job!

comes “I Wish”, a tune that fares rather well due to the electronic
nature of Luis Dubuc’s original material. ForeverThe Sickest Kids have adapted the Men In Black theme song
into their pop rock sound quite well, while My American Heart
have pulled off a sleazy rendition of the classic “California Love”. Akon is a horrible excuse for a musician so he hasn’t really given The Maine much to work with. Still, their take on “I Wanna Love
You” is far from being the worst thing I’ve heard.
L’s spot on version of “The Seed”, a song which is heavily
filled out by instrumentation in its original form so the cover works
really well, while the previously mentioned All Time Low have
turned the Rhianna shit shingle that is “Umbrella” into an
impressive pop punk tune. Bringing up the tail is the always-reliable New Found Glory, who have taken the politically motivated lyrics
of Arrested Development and turned them into a sing-a-long acoustic
anthem.
If you’ve got a sense of humour
then you’ll probably get a few spins out of this record. If not, just
get drunk, throw a house party and watch your friends dance like idiots.
