Calling all music fans who enjoy witnessing some live music by the water: Ocean Sounds festival, situated on the picturesque location of Churchill Island in Victoria, is returning on Saturday, 6 January, with a wicked line-up.

Xavier Rudd, Spiderbait and Melbourne Ska Orchestra lead the 2024 edition of the festival, with Felipe Baldomir, Sunfruits, Janie Gordon and Fonzie accompanying them for an unforgettable day of live music.

Tickets to Ocean Sounds go on sale on Thursday, 31 August, at 8 am AEST.

The family-friendly, all-ages event is located on Churchill Island, Victoria 3925. Organisers also note that Ocean Sounds is only one event in 2023, not two, so be prepared for one special day by the sea.

Ocean Sounds will also showcase the best wines, cheeses, and gourmet foods locals have to offer. Take your picnic rug and settle in with some of your mates, listen to some live tunes, and enjoy the best of Churchill Island. You can buy your tickets here.

Xavier Rudd, one of Australia’s favourite artists, has had an exceedingly busy 2022 and 2023 - playing a mammoth 37-date Australian tour from May to July of last year and no less than 88 shows in 2022, including 50 dates in Europe from 9 September to 10 November - in support of his latest album, Jan Jun Moon, which was released in March 2022.

Earlier this year, The Music tracked down the top five tracks you might have forgotten about from the triple j Hottest 100 of 2002, which Double J re-aired as triple j spun the 2022 Hottest 100. On the list was Spiderbait’s Arse Huggin Pants. Here’s how The Music described the banger:

“Arse Huggin' Pants, from Spiderbait’s fifth album, The Flight Of Wally Funk, is a synth-led tune with Janet English's vocals closer to Kylie Minogue than the alternative rock the band is known for.”

The album was named after Wally Funk, the first woman to be an air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board in the US, as well as the first woman to be a flight instructor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and the oldest woman to travel to space (82 years old in 2021). So, with that inspiration in mind, it makes sense that Arse Huggin' Pants sounds like it's from space.
