Why Adelaide-based Live Music TV Show 'Jam Live' Is So Important

Local artist Bjear gives us some insight into the SA scene.

SA singer-songwriter Bjear tells us what separates the state from the rest ahead of his appearance on Channel 9 Adelaide local music series Jam Live this Saturday.

I think the show concept is rad and it’s the first of its kind in a really long time. It can be really difficult for artists to get their name out there in Australia, especially when you're not on the East Coast. There's not a lot of platforms that are doing this sort of thing, so if you're not on the radio or don't have a record deal or lots of money behind you it can be so difficult, even if the product is great.

It’s important to have these promo mediums for artists to be showcased on, so we can get people along to these gigs and supporting live music. I think it’s also good that Jam Live doesn’t take away from ticket sales or profits, as these things are also really important to the artist, bands and venues. The scene in Adelaide is a lot of fun and it is great to be around! The local scene is really progressing forward and artists are producing lots of very cool sounds.

It’s great that a lot of people are doing and trying to do really different things and due to the fact that our population is smaller, there aren't a lot of bands that sound the same, so every gig is so unique. This is another reason why it’s really useful to have a platform like Jam Live to push out all the different types of music that we have currently floating around our city.

We've been very fortunate to be welcomed into the scene with open arms by people like Sharni (The Porch Sessions). Porch Sessions is another really great initiative that helps artists bring new sounds to new audiences in a really cool space. It’s great that projects like Porch Sessions and Jam Live can work together in getting the word out there.

It can be a tough industry at times but we are in it because we love what we do and anything that supports that is a huge bonus for us.

I’m looking forward to seeing loads more artists be featured on Jam Live to help give them the recognition that they deserve. Although the first season is only short, let’s hope it continues, so our artists and bands can benefit from this.

Bjear’s favourite Adelaide artists right now:

The Shaolin Afronauts

Ella Ion

The Winter Gypsy

LEO

Attila My Honey

SA punters can watch Jam Live on Nine Adelaide, Saturdays at 4:30pm, before it's available to stream nationwide via the Nine website.
