The film-maker calls upon his twelve year-old self for some inspiration.

Director Wes Anderson has revealed to theMusic.com.au how his own childhood soul and memories influenced his much-hyped and widely-lauded film Moonrise Kingdom, which premieres in Australian theatres this week.

Anderson had a specific aim when it came to telling the story of two twelve year-olds in love in the film, influenced by his own unique take on love at the same age.

“The idea of a romantic fantasy seemed almost magical. I remember how much I wanted these fantasies to be real,” Anderson recalled.

“I was hoping if we could make this relationship feel authentic, have these scenes feel like they were really happening, that maybe people would see something they haven't seen in too many movies but that they recognise from their own lives. I was trying to see if I could recreate my own memories.”

The film has received a great deal of critical acclaim since it first screened at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. It boasts an all-star cast including Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton, as well as the two young leads Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward.

Moonrise Kingdom hits theatres Thursday 30 August.
