The Pantera "reunion" shows have begun, with the band now comprising Phil Anselmo (vocals), bassist Rex Brown and new members Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne, Black Label Society) on guitar and Anthrax's Charlie Benante on drums.

Filling the shoes of the Abbott brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul is a tall order, but the current lineup honours the original groove-metal pioneers.

While Anselmo couldn't sound like he did in the 90s in 2022, his vocals hold up remarkably well.

Tragedy has struck Pantera twice since their initial breakup,  with the tragic onstage death of Dimebag Darrell in December 2004 and the passing of his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul in June 2018.

The members had all remained active, post-Pantera, with Dimebag forming Damage Plan, with whom he played at the time of his shocking death and Vinnie Paul playing in HellYeah. Anselmo has been involved in several projects, most notably, Down, while brown has been a member of Kill Devil Hill and has released a solo record.

Pantera are one of the most recognisable names in metal. Formed in 1981 in Arlington, Texas, the band developed a stomping, groove-driven blend of 'southern metal' that has gone on to influence the sound of modern metal.

The band's three record run of 1992's Vulgar Display of Power, 1994's Far Beyond Driven and 1996's The Great Southern Trendkill is considered by fans to be their finest work. The band were the recipient of four GRAMMY Awards for Best Metal Performance.
