Now that's how you do a Zoom call!

The current lockdowns meant the folks at triple j couldn't be there in person to announce the 2021 Unearthed High winners, but that didn't stop the annual radio comp from going all out to congratulate this year's winners, The Rions.

Sneakily jumping in on a Zoom band meeting with the Sydney quartet, morning hosts Bryce & Ebony gave the boys the good news, complete with confetti cannons and some extra special surprise guests.

Lime Cordiale, Spacey Jane, and Tones & I all popped in to give their best wishes to the group, and impart some words of wisdom as they embark on the next stage in their blossoming careers.

Triple J Unearthed music director Dave Ruby Howe said that this year was a particularly difficult one to find a winner, thanks to the incredible talent showcased throughout the country.

“As difficult as it is to turn more than 1,400 entries into just five finalists, it's a desperately hard decision to pick a winner to top the class of 2021," he explained.

"In the end, Sydney's The Rions edged ahead of the competition by presenting an undeniable all-round package that impressed all of us at triple j Unearthed - not to mention the triple j textline which popped off with every play of their roaring single Night Light. With their main-stage-ready confidence and urgent indie hooks, this foursome is ready to launch and we reckon that the Unearthed High crown will be the rocket fuel to send them flying.”
