TRACK BY TRACK: Buzz Act Sycco Takes Us Through Her Eponymous 'Sycco's First EP'

With her debut EP having been released last week, Brisbane singer Sycco takes us through the tracks and the story behind them.

More Sycco More Sycco

I can’t even begin to explain how excited I am that Sycco’s First EP is actually happening. It’s psychedelic, it’s random, it's enthusiastic, it's colourful - it’s everything Sycco’s First EP should be. A few of these songs are from two years ago, and then some I wrote earlier in the year but made sense to be on here!

Best Before

Best Before was actually inspired by a bread expiry tag that was on my desk when Ed Quinn and I were creating over Zoom. When I was writing the chorus it all clicked what I was writing about. In the past I’ve been super scared about getting into relationships and so this was another instance where I thought I was going to back out of something really special but I decided not to give into that fear - by the end of the song I realise that it's something I could unlearn.

Past Life

Past Life is about a disagreement I had with one of my close friends. The song is about my questioning whether I should confront them and wondering if this same thing happened to us in a past life. I wonder what will happen when I go to Berlin with them one day.

Dribble

I am so happy Dribble is a part of the EP, this song has been the most surprising of all songs! I never thought it could resonate with people as much as it has. This song really helped me understand what I like about Sycco and where I can take it.

Germs

I think creating Germs was the most collaborative session I have ever done. It was Ed Quinn and I’s first session and we just vibe and it was just a straight flow of bouncing off of one another. My favourite part of this song is the bridge, it’s so fun to play live.

Happy You’re Here

Happy You’re Here was the first love song I have ever properly made, it is so special to me. This was the second song Golden Vessel and I had ever made, he really has a knack for getting my emotional side out into songs. This song is about thinking someone is too good for you and so you’re just incredibly grateful when they are there.

My Ways

Putting My Ways on this EP was super necessary for me given its relevance to me still. I also think its special putting my first over the Internet creations on the same EP to mark the time to look back at when I’m older.

Time’s Up

Time’s Up is still one of the songs I am most proud of. This song reminded me that I can produce for myself without letting self-doubt get in the way. I’m excited for people to hear more music like this.
