More Tinariwen More Tinariwen

Tinariwen have announced their long-awaited return to Australian stages, adding to their VIVID and RISING festival appearances with a quadrant of headline shows.

Following a couple of dates in New Zealand at the end of May – Wednesday May 29 at the Powerhouse in Auckland (Tāmaki Makaurau) and Thursday May 30 at The Opera House in Wellington (Te Whanganui-a-Tara), to be exact – the iconic Saharan rockers will start their Australian trek in Sydney (Eora) on Saturday June 1, taking over the Opera House as part of this year’s VIVID Live program.

From there, they’ll perform headline shows in Adelaide (Kaurna, Sunday June 2 at The Gov), Fremantle (Boorloo, Tuesday June 4 at the Freo Social) and Brisbane (Meanjin, Thursday June 6 at The Triffid), before headlining The Forum in Melbourne (Naarm) for this year’s RISING Festival program. And last but certainly not least, fans in Hobart (nipaluna) will be able to catch Tinariwen at the Odeon Theatre on Saturday June 8.

Tickets for all the headline shows go on sale at 9am local time next Thursday (April 4), following a presale that kicks off at 10am AEDT this Wednesday (March 27). Registration for the presale will close at midnight tomorrow (March 26) – head here to sign up, or bookmark this link for the general sale.

Notably, this will mark Tinariwen’s first time headlining theatres Down Under; they’ve played stages here three times before – first in 2004, then in 2009, and most recently in 2018 – however their first and most recent visits here have been for the WOMADelaide festival in SA, and their 2009 trek saw them play exclusively at the Byron Bay Bluesfest.

Naturally, we’re beyond stoked to be catching them at The Triffid, where the band’s idiosyncratic sound will mesh perfectly with the venue’s own one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

The tour comes in support of Tinariwen’s ninth studio album, Amatssou (which translates from Tamashek to English as “beyond the fear”), which arrived last May and garnered universal acclaim.
