The Superjesus are back with a new song, but technically, it’s an old one. Covering the punk rock tune Dancing By Myself by the English punk band Gen X – originally released in 1980 and remixed a year later when the band’s frontman, Billy Idol, went solo – the Aussie rock favourites take on a classic with pure joy.

Featuring Sarah McLeod’s iconic rasp, The Superjesus pay respect to a song we all know and love with a brilliant music video that’s led by the idea of people dancing by themselves to the song.

“My session looked like the fragments of my mind, CHAOS, but I sat there and edited for hours and hours and hours until I got it right,” McLeod wrote on the band’s Facebook about the video. “There’s some pretty good dancers in there! Now I look at it, and I love it, it’s JOY, baby! Pure JOY!”

The Dancing By Myself video is stacked with special guests, including You Am I’s Tim Rogers, radio DJ Ugly Phil, Luttsy from Nova Brisbane, actor Jodie Le Vesconte, ABC broadcaster Katherine Feeney, Wolf Pack’s Annette Wolf, Chelsea Blazewicz Winne from Tasty Corner, and many more. You can check out the delightful video below.

As for how The Superjesus sound covering Billy Idol? Well, they nailed it. They stick to the song’s core melody, retain the bright, punchy guitars, and pay the song justice by respecting it.

In other recent The Superjesus news, the band’s former members, Jason Slack and Travis Dragani, are suing the band’s mainstays, McLeod and Stuart Rudd, for wages and superannuation compensation.

Slack and Dragani alleged they weren’t paid for promotional work or rehearsal time with the band and claimed they attempted to settle the matter privately before taking it to court.

Before that news broke, The Superjesus announced they were launching Sumo gin.

Named after their 1998 debut album of the same name, the Sumo gin is a 500ml bottle that can supply 15 standard drinks and 40% ABV, celebrating 25 years of Sumo. Limited to 250 bottles, you’ll want to quickly pre-order yours from the Groglords website.

The Sumo gin followed the band’s latest single, Lights Out, and a corresponding tour.

Dancing With Myself is officially OUT on all your favourite digital platforms!! Go check it out!! For the clip we decided it would be cool to have a bunch of people dancing by themselves. One of the guys in the Wolf Pack actually suggested this to me, so i thought i would ask the pack if they wanted to send me in footage of themselves dancing and I’d chop it up and see how we go. Then i got the band to do the same, it was pretty loose and fun to do, it was that kinda clip, just everyone in their happy zone having a boogie, I did mine with no make up and no pants on :) Then when I showed a few mates suddenly others wanted to be in it, so it grew and grew... my session looked like the fragments of my mind, CHAOS, but I sat there and edited for hours and hours and hours until i got it right. There’s some pretty good dancers in there! Now I look at it and I love it, it’s JOY baby! Pure JOY!
