The Heavy Songs Likely To Appear On Triple J's Hottest 100

Tomorrow is the big day: triple j will unveil its Hottest 100, the publicly-voted 100 best songs of 2022.

Like most years, heavy music is looking to be heavily under-represented, with the website 100 Warm Tunas, "the internet's most accurate predictions" for the Hottest 100, only predicting a handful of heavy-ish songs to feature on the countdown.

Right now, the prediction website suggests that only Glitch by Parkway Drive (at #96), the heavy-adjacent Machine Gun Kelly ft Bring Me The Horizon single, maybe, at #86, Stand Atlantic with pity party (ft Royal & the Serpent) at #79, blink-182's Edging at #77, The Foundations Of Decay by My Chemical Romance (#66), sTraNgeRs by Bring Me The Horizon at #30, and Kamikaze by Violent Soho at #25. 

Paramore's This Is Why is expected to land at #11, Girl Sports by Teen Jesus And The Jean Teasers at #9, and Jackie Down The Line by Fontaines D.C. at #93. Considering how many songs of diverse genres feature on the countdown, it would be nice to see more heavy music represented. It's disappointing that Void Of Vision, Alpha Wolf, Windwaker, and Malevolence haven't made the cut.

As Maniacs reports, heavy music has featured on the Hottest 100 in previous years, but never with the showings it deserves. In their 20 Heaviest Songs To Be Voted Into The Hottest 100 feature, the publication rounded up classics by Parkway Drive (from the Deep Blue and Ire eras), Slipknot, System Of A Down, Rammstein, Karnivool, Rage Against The Machine, Korn, Architects, Metallica, Linkin Park, and more. Why no showings from Architects lastest album, the classic symptoms of a broken spirit, on this year's predictions?

The fact that Slipknot’s inaugural Knofest Australia sold out its Melbourne leg months in advance suggests that people might like heavy metal music and that institutions like the Hottest 100 don't represent heavy music fans.

The massive touring festival will see Slipknot joined by Parkway Drive, Megadeth, Trivium, Northlane, Amon Amarth, In Flames, Knocked Loose, Spiritbox, Story Of The Year, Alphawolf, Void Of Vision, Bad Omens and Malevolence.

It kicks off at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne on March 24 before heading to Sydney’s Centennial Park on March 25 and Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds on March 26. Find tickets here.
