The Best Punk Albums To Come Out Of WA, According To Scalphunter

13 October 2016 | 5:58 pm | Staff Writer

"When this album was released it was a great time to be a young punk."

WA established itself as a frontrunner early on in the game when it came to heavy releases, so it’s not surprising the state has yielded a slew of classics over the years.

After taking out WAM’s Best Punk/Hardcore award last year and only yesterday scoring another WAMAwards nomination, Perth rock’n’roll/punk powerhouse Scalphunter are piecing together their own LP to join the ranks.

With an album fundraiser show locked down for this Saturday, Oct 15, at Rosemount Hotel’s Four5Nine Bar, they’ve compiled their quintessential list of local releases.

Help add another scorcher to the ranks.

Homicides - Gimme Some More

“The Homicides were the kings of Perth when I started going to shows. This album is rough, raw, fast and intense. That’s what I loved ‘bout music then, that's what I love about it now.”

Alex Cotton (guitar)

Full Scale Deflection - Symptoms Of Chaos

“People might hate me for this, but I was 17 and sneaking into shows at Grosvenor to see these guys. Not only was it awesome metal but such an epic live show. They were the band that made me start going to see every show I could get into and made me want to play live shows.”

Ash Rohde (drums)

Miles Away - Miles Away

“For me, Miles Away's debut self-titled album was a game changer for Perth hardcore. Finally, an album that stood up to the test and gave WA some respect towards the hardcore punk scene.”

Matty Van Leeuwin (bass)

Battletruk/Pillar of Hope - Battle Of Hope

“Battletruk and Pillar Of Hope were the big brothers of West Australian punk and hardcore music. When this album was released it was a great time to be a young punk and have great older peers/role models to show you the ropes.”
