The post-hardcore queens in The Beautiful Monument have once again proved they’re simply incapable of making a bad song, dropping the absolute scorcher that is Misery.

It comes ahead of their national Misery Loves Company tour with Eat Your Heart Out and Headstrong, which kicks off in Meanjin/Brisbane next Thursday (June 22) before rolling through Awakabal/Newcastle, Eora/Sydney, Naarm/Melbourne and Boorloo/Perth.

Here’s what The Beautiful Monument’s ferocious frontwoman, Lizi Blanco, had to say about the band’s bewitching new banger: “Misery is a theme song for those who are completely oblivious to their one-sided relationships. It is the painful reality of a profound sense of loneliness that an individual begins experiencing when their ‘perfect relationship’ begins to crumble and their metaphorical see-saw starts tipping.

“I wrote this song as an onlooker about a person I know who is very obviously blinded by their warped view of ‘love’. Originally my heart broke for them, but there’s only so many times a person can ignore the warning signs before your words turn into mumbled sounds of nothing.

“People don’t always just say things to start fights or belittle you, most times they’re genuinely concerned for your happiness and want to make sure that you’re doing what’s right for you, not just what ‘societal norms’ expect of you.”

True to The Beautiful Monument’s time-honoured ethos – that if they’re given a chance to take something truly over the top, they won’t even think twice – Misery comes alongside a stunning video helmed by Karl Steller of Steller Media. You can have a look at that below.

Misery is The Beautiful Monument’s second new track for 2023, following the release of comeback single Hellbound back in February. That one marked their first offering in a truly cooked four years, following up on their second album, I’m The Reaper (the “sequel” to 2017’s I’m The Sin) which arrived in June of 2019.

Now the question remains: when are we going to hear album number three? Could 2023 be the year? We suppose only time will tell…
