The 1975 singer Matty Healy has revealed that the band are back in the studio working on a new album. He made the announcement while on stage on Wednesday (21 February), nearly five months after he said the band would be going on hiatus from touring.

While performing in Birmingham on Wednesday, Healy addressed fans’ concerns about the band going away “for ages” and confirmed that The 1975 are back in the studio.

“The truth is, everyone's kind of afraid that we're going to go away for ages,” he began. “We're working on a new record now. So, I suppose that I can't operate without my friends... we kind of are The 1975 so...”

Healy then took out his phone and placed it near the microphone so fans could hear a snippet of new music, sharing an emotionally resonant lyric: “It's a line actually, what is it... ‘I take a minute when I think I won't die from stopping’”.

He continued, “And that's really how I've felt for a long time. We really appreciate you guys and thank you so much. We're going to go away and hopefully make you a good new album. I just don't know what to do in the meantime, really.”

The 1975 are wrapping up the last dates on their Still… At Their Very Best tour in the UK and Europe.

In December, Matty Healy teased new music, writing alongside a meme starring Jane Lynch’s Glee character: “I am going to create an album that is so good”. Healy accompanied the meme by declaring that he’s “feelin’ it”.

Announcing that The 1975 are going on hiatus in the most The 1975 way possible, Healy told a Sacramento audience in September, “It’s wonderful you’re all here. After this tour, we will be going on an indefinite hiatus with shows, so it’s wonderful to have you guys with us tonight. Thank you so much.”

The 1975 returned to Australia last April. The Music reviewer Sam Mead commented on their Perth show, “The night was everything you’d expect from a The 1975 concert, controversy, banter, sex (the song), drugs, and rock and roll. And, of course, Matty Healy nursing a glass of wine and a ciggy.

“With a hefty run time of 1hr 45mins, there was a lot to play with here, but every moment felt purposeful and warranted. This really is The 1975 at their very best.”
