It’s been a long time coming, and now Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers fans and Australian punk music enthusiasts can now rejoice: the rapidly rising punk rock four-piece have finally announced their debut album, I Love You.

Since their formation in 2019 and subsequent debut EP release, Pretty Good For A Girl Band, which they dropped last year, Anna Ryan (they/them; vocals/guitar), Scarlett McKahey (she/her; guitar/vocals), Jaida Stephenson (she/her; bass) and Neve van Boxsel (she/her; drums) have made waves in Australian music with their unflinching honesty and unforgettable tunes.

They’re the kind of band that channels Riot Grrrl-era energy with a 2023 spin and they happen to be the most natural, confident and likeable punk-rockers you’ll hear.

With songs exploring systemic sexism (Girl Sports), fighting self-doubt (Lights Out), and navigating a relationship that’s changed too much to ignore (AHHH!), I Love You promises a new collection of candid reflections and sonic delights. The album will be released on Friday, 8 September, via Domestic La La.

Their first song written and sung by van Boxsel (who also directed and edited its accompanying video, which you can watch below), it’s also their first fully-acoustic tune that finds van Boxsel leaning on her bandmates after experiencing the trauma of sexual assault and highlights the importance of speaking up with loved ones.

"Never Saw It Coming took me over a year to finish writing. It’s about a very difficult topic that unfortunately is not just my story but many others,” van Boxsel revealed in a statement.

“It’s one of the first songs I brought to the band and the first song I’ve ever sung lead on so having Anna, Jaida and Scarlett support me so much with such a personal song made something that was really difficult, a lot easier.

“I hope this song helps anyone feel less alone in what they’re going through because having this support from my three best friends helped me endlessly."

I Love You also features the previously released AHHH! and Lights Out, which we called “blistering” and described as “three minutes of sheer power, riffs, and memorable call-and-response lines”.

You can pre-save I Love You here and catch them opening for Foo Fighters at AAMI Park in Melbourne this December.
