More Speed More Speed

The Sydney hardcore punk band Speed have been making waves this year with their beatdown jams of unity.

Vocalist Jem Siow formed Speed in 2019 following the quiet breakup of Endless Heights. The band released their debut EP, Gang Called Speed, in June this year.

The EP saw the band embrace their mission statement of putting Australian hardcore on the map and tracked journeys through the bandmates taking ownership of their identities. Speed rally against intolerance and call out racism, xenophobia and toxic masculinity in the hardcore scene.

Now, Speed return with a new unifying banger, One Blood We Bleed, which will definitely open up the pits. The band bring tons of energy and aggressiveness found in hardcore punk but with messages of solidarity. Filmed between Los Angeles and Sydney in just three takes, the group are having a wicked time - as they should be.

Earlier this year, the band's mosh pit went viral online, with the former professional basketball player turned right-wing religious commentator and attempted politician Royce White sharing the video on Twitter. He commented on it, stating, "And I'm the one with a Mental Illness? We are in a spiritual crisis. What in the false catharsis is this? Vegan coke heads getting right up on the edge of physical confrontation to deal with their unresolved despair and angst — Only faith in God can do that. Gloves Off!"

The video has been watched over 240,000 times and has received over 1,000 quote tweets. Instagram account viralclipz, which has over 600,000 followers, also shared the video, asking fans, "Who's going to this concert lol."

Unsurprisingly the post has had some high-profile figures see it, none bigger than Shaquille O'Neal commenting, saying, "me". Could we potentially see Shaq deep in a Speed mosh pit? It would be one of the most iconic moments in Australian music history.

And in the most incredible hardcore gig announcement this year, Speed will open for Turnstile on the band's two Laneway Festival sideshows in Melbourne and Sydney in February 2023. The shows are already sold out.
