"Fifty years later the outfit has lost none of its potency, not that we think it really bears any comparison to the creation currently being favoured by young Sam Smith..."

Sam Smith awed the red carpet at the 2023 Brit Awards this weekend in an outfit that channelled David Bowie, designed by the enigmatic designer Harri.

Harri, real name Harikrishnan Keezhathil Surendran Pillai, was born in Kerala, London, and is now based in London, UK.

Smith's outfit echoes Harri's typical style of inflatable latex. "Sam Smith wearing custom HARRI for The Brits. What would you name this look? #michelinman," Harri wrote on Instagram.

The look wasn't lost on the David Bowie estate, who commented on social media, "But I remember Sam ’cos they was like me…*" in a post that displayed Bowie wearing a custom inflatable Kansai Yamamoto outfit.

"Another Herb Ritts 1989 shot here of DB in the extraordinary Kansai Yamamoto costume he was first photographed wearing by Masayoshi Sukita in 1973, also pictured here.

"Fifty years later the outfit has lost none of its potency, not that we think it really bears any comparison to the creation currently being favoured by young Sam Smith.

"* Well, OK, but you must admit they’re brave at least."

Last month, Sam Smith announced a massive Australian tour for October and November.

The Grammy Award-winning singer will return to the country in October to celebrate their album Gloria, which dropped on 27 January via Universal Music.

Smith’s Aussie tour, which will be their first since 2018, will kick off at Adelaide Entertainment Centre on 28 October, before the I'm Not The Only One singer performs at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, on 31 October, Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney on 3 November and Brisbane Entertainment Centre on 8 November.

Their fourth album, Gloria, is made up of 13 tracks, with features from Jessie Reyez, Kim Petras, Koffee and Ed Sheeran. The vocalist's angelic tenor and sweet musings that the singer-songwriter is known for can be found in Gloria, but there is an underlying sexiness to this album that showcases Smith in a grittier style, The Music found in our album review.
