US roots icon Ry Cooder claims that US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney "scares" him in a statement released to announce his new album Election Special.

The new album is released on August 21, on Nonesuch, in the lead-up to the US November 6 election which currently finds Romney and President Obama only a percentage apart in polls.

Cooder describes his album as "a wakeup call" in the introduction of a track-by-track break down of the new nine-track set.

Songs on the album take aim at Romney (Mutt Romney Blues), corporate America (The Wall Street Part Of Town), Guantanamo (Guantanamo) and the recent shooting of Trayvon Martin (Going To Tampa).
