Vulture Street, Powderfinger’s fifth album containing the hits (Baby I’ve Got You) On My Mind, Sunsets, Love Your Way, and Since You’ve Been Gone, has been celebrating its 20th anniversary.

The album, 20 years after its release, has returned to #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, Australian Album Chart, and Vinyl Chart. Powderfinger now holds the record for the longest time between an Australian album debuting at #1 and returning to #1.

The sales that brought Vulture Street back to the top spot would have been propelled by pre-sales for the reissue that began shipping last Friday (25 August). Fans eagerly pre-ordered a limited edition 3LP coloured vinyl set, CDs, t-shirts, jumpers, caps, water bottles, tea towels, stubby packs and more.

Vulture Street gained the band the Best Rock Album award at the 2003 ARIA Awards and spent 47 weeks on the ARIA Charts after peaking at #1. They won further ARIA Awards for Vulture Street, including Album Of The Year, Best Group and Best Cover Art for the artwork, which featured Czech supermodel Eva Herzigová.

On the band’s newest #1, Powderfinger commented in a press release, “We are completely honoured and astounded that Vulture Street is back at the top of the pops after all these years.

“We are so humbled to have received such continued support from everyone at our management, Secret Sounds, our label Universal, but most of all from you, our fans. You are the ones that make it all possible, and we want to say how much we love and appreciate your support. We are very, very lucky (ahem) boys. Mil gracias GUAPETONES. Love JC, Hoggy, BF, DZ and Cogs x x x x”.

ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd celebrated the “second Aussie #1 in three weeks” and congratulated the band on their achievement.

Herd added, “Bernard, Darren, Ian, John and Jon have played an incredibly integral role in modern Australian rock history, with Vulture Street alone adding so much to the Australian songbook. Its success 20 years on is a testament to that enormous contribution. Congratulations again.”

Sean Warner, President and CEO of Universal Music Australia & New Zealand, said that on behalf of the UMA family, the label are thrilled by the outpouring of love and affection towards Powderfinger.

“The enduring legacy, the emotional attachment and the quality of the music (and the band) has stood the test of time, and Vulture Street sounds as anthemic and relevant as the day it was released,” Warner commented. “The true and long-lasting partnership we have with team Powderfinger is one we hold dearly, and we are honoured to call them friends and family.”
