"If by chance the attacker is reading this message we implore him to turn himself into police immediately."

Police are asking for public assistance in relation to a sexual assault that occurred at Victoria's Rainbow Serpent Festival this past January.

A media release published yesterday by police reports that a 21-year-old woman struck up a conversation with an unknown man at the festival between 3pm-7pm.

After the female was about to head back towards the main site, the man reportedly grabbed her by the hair and throat, then "pushed her up against a van and sexually assaulted her".

The report continues, "the victim managed to get away when the man followed her and grabbed her again before sexually assaulting her another two times. The woman pushed the male away before he bit her twice to her upper arm. He then got into a hammock and the woman returned to her campsite".

Police have released a digital image of the alleged offender, believed to be 28-29 years old "with sandy brown hair, blue eyes and a pointy nose".

Rainbow Serpent organisers have taken to Facebook to also seek public assistance.

"As we have clearly stated predatory behaviour at Rainbow WILL NOT be tolerated," the statement reads.

"We ask that our community works together to try and identify the 28-29 year old attacker and assist the police in any way possible.

"Our thoughts and compassion go out to the young woman who was assaulted and we assure her and everyone at Rainbow that we are committed to providing a safe festival environment and will work tirelessly to address the tough challenges faced by our society.

"If by chance the attacker is reading this message we implore him to turn himself into police immediately."

The report comes just weeks after organisers were forced to defend the festival's safety following the death of one of its punters.
