Mushroom Group have unveiled the hotly anticipated lineup for the upcoming Mushroom 50 concert – a one-day extravaganza celebrating 50 years of the most influential company in Australian music – featuring a stacked bill of 24 artists.

Coming as part of this year’s government-backed ALWAYS LIVE program, the show will go down on Sunday November 26 at Naarm/Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena. It’s dubbed 50 Songs For 50 Years, and as hinted by such, will see artists from the across the bill perform 50 iconic songs from the Mushroom catalogue.

Among those named in a press release are Working Class Man by Jimmy Barnes, Holy Grail by Hunters & Collectors, Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap, Riptide by Vance Joy performed as a cover song, Hoops by The Rubens, It’s Only The Beginning by Deborah Conway, Before Too Long by Paul Kelly, and Living In The 70’s by Skyhooks. All of the aforementioned acts will perform at the Mushroom 50 concert, except Skyhooks (which is fair given they disbanded in 1980 and frontman Graeme Strachan has been dead for some two decades).

The rest of the lineup spans the full spate of Mushroom’s eclectic roster, with other highlights including Amy Shark, Ian Moss, DMA’S, Missy Higgins, Kate Ceberano, Birds Of Tokyo, The Teskey Brothers, Dan Sultan, Bliss N Eso, Vika & Linda, Gordi and Fred Loneragan (of Machinations fame). More acts are set to be announced in the coming weeks – for now, you can see the full first announcement below.

Tickets for Mushroom 50 will go on sale at 3pm AEDT next Wednesday (October 18), following two presales: one for Telstra Plus members starting at 2pm this Friday (October 13), and one for Frontier Touring members starting at 1pm next Monday (October 16). Two dollars from every ticket sold will be donated to Support Act via their 2023 Ausmusic T-Shirt Day campaign. Head here for more details on all three ticket releases, and here to see a range of exclusive Mushroom 50 merchandise.

In a press statement, Mushroom Group CEO Matt Gudinski said of the upcoming concert: “This is going to be an incredible once-in-a-lifetime night, to commemorate fifty years of great Mushroom music and Australian talent. The Mushroom family is determined to bring together a special evening for all involved. With more than twenty artists performing as part of the event, this will be a true celebration of Australian music and a showcase our thriving local music scene and its history. I know my late father [the legendary Michael Gudinski] would be very proud of what we are putting together.”

Sharing the excitement was ALWAYS LIVE CEO Steve Smith, who added: “We’re thrilled to play a part in celebrating the enduring legacy and impact that Mushroom has had on Australia’s music landscape. ALWAYS LIVE is all about memorable music moments, and Mushroom 50 Live is sure to be an unforgettable event, and a standout in ALWAYS LIVE’s 2023 program.”

Speaking on his appearance at the concert, Ian Moss said: “From Matchbook to this day, the Mushroom family have always been wonderfully supportive of my career and me personally. Performing at the Mushroom 50th Anniversary concert, a celebration of the iconic legacy Michael built and Matt is taking forward, will be a privilege. I can't wait!”

And last but certainly not least, Kate Ceberano weighed in by saying: “I feel so proud to be a part of this iconic Mushroom 50th celebration event. Michael’s vision and support of not only Australian music,  but the whole industry that champions us artists! His potent enthusiasm and no bullshit personality is sorely missed. For him it was a straight YES or NAH! ‘Maybe’ for him was just a cop out! Long live the Godfather of Australian music!”
