St Kilda venue steps up

Staple St Kilda record store Pure Pop Record will begin hosting live shows at emerging venue St Kilda Memo while their own live space remains in the pipeline.

The much-loved store has been approached by the venue – housed in a 1924 art deco former cinema – to curate a monthly night that will expand their music offering. It also allows Pure Pop's Dave Stevens to host bands in a 400-capacity room, whereas Pure Pop can only house 50.

The first show will feature Charles Jenkins & The Zhivagos on Thursday 26 June.

“The idea is to get a headliner and a young up and comer as a support… keeping the price affordable,” Stevens told theMusic.com.au.

Pure Pop's own live shows had been restricted under council noise restrictions and resident complaints. It prompting a $150,000 crowdfunding drive, which reached its target in May last year, to construct a soundproofed courtyard. Stevens told theMusic today that construction was in the negotiation stage with the landlord.

Pure Pop's upcoming shows include Ross Evans Friday 20 June, David Bridie Saturday 21 June and The Large Number 12s Sunday 22 June.
