Two members of US metal band Iced Earth have quit following guitarist Jon Schaffer's involvement in the US Capitol riots earlier this year.

According to TMZ, lead vocalist Stu Block (who joined the band in 2011) and bass player Luke Appleton (who joined in 2012) have both shared statements saying they had left the group.

“In response to recent events & circumstances, I have notified Iced Earth’s management and Jon that I will be resigning as the Iced Earth bassist with immediate effect,” said Appleton in a statement to Facebook. “I would like to thank everyone who has sent me their support and love during this difficult time. Thank you!!!”

"Hey All, Well, there are times and events when you have to take stock and re evaluate your life, work, and trajectory for the future," said Block.

"That being said I have informed Jon and his current management that I must announce my resignation from Iced Earth with immediate effect.

"Before I made any personal decision I needed the last few weeks to process the situation as well as respect others in our camp processing the situation. I thank you all very much for respecting this. It’s the best decision in many ways for my personal/ professional growth going forward. Time to move on, heal and prosper.

"Much love and respect to you all. Don’t fret! Stay tuned for some exciting things to come! Time to embark upon a new chapter. Be good to each other."

It's also believed that guitarist Jake Dreyer is also "distancing" himself from the group.

Schaffer is currently facing six charges for his role in the riots, including Knowingly Entering or Remaining in any Restricted Building or Grounds Without Lawful Authority, Disrupting the Orderly Conduct of Government Business, Knowingly Engages in an Act of Physical Violence Against any Person or Property in any Restricted Building or Grounds, Violent Entry and Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building, Engage in an Act of Physical Violence in a Capitol Building and Parade, Demonstrate, or Picket in a Capitol Building.

It's been confirmed by the FBI that Schaffer was among rioters that attacked police with bear spray - a capsaicin pepper spray - during the riots. He is yet to face trial or issue a statement.
