Groovin The Moo Reveals Its 'Commoooonity Program'

Groovin The Moo isn’t just a festival; it’s a life-affirming experience where punters, volunteers, artists and their crews are all there for one reason: celebrating music and community.

Today, the regional travelling festival unveils its community - no, comooooonity - program. Festival organisers promise fun, crafty and fabulous initiatives hosted by lovely local groups. The comooooonity programs range from “work experience for budding festival lovers, to programs for disadvantaged youth, to opportunities for local artists, to safe spaces and pop-up parties.”

The first initiative featured at each stop of Groovin The Moo is Graffin The Moo, where the ordinary black fences surrounding the festival grounds come to life. Local emerging talents are encouraged to take the opportunity and find inspiration within the event artwork and diverse styles. 

Next up, the dedicated LGBTQIA+ Safe Spaces, which are as vital as ever. The safe space is hosted and curated by a local LGBTQIA+ group in each town. The area is for anyone who wants to have fun and champion good causes, all while raising awareness about the local support facilities for youth identifying as LGBTQIA+. 

Groovin The Moo also provides Local Artist Showcases, a space dedicated to local artists and DJs, all handled by local stage managers. 

Lastly, the Powder Pen is supplied to keep punters’ festival makeup looking fresh and glamorous. As the festival organisers describe it, “For a small donation, you can get a quick hair and make-up ‘zjoosh’ thanks to local beauty, barbershop and hairdressing salons at most of our shows. A portion of proceeds from the Powder Pen will go back to the charity of the salons’ choice.”

The 2023 festival line-up has something for everyone, from crowd favourites Skepta and Denzel Curry to Fatboy Slim. The triple j Hottest 100 was loaded up in the front end with Groovin The Moo artists, including Eliza Rose, who took out the number 2 spot with B.O.T.A (Baddest Of Them All), Ball Park Music (#8 Stars In My Eyes), Skegss (#19 Stranger Days), LUUDE (#28 Big City Life), Teen Jesus And The Jean Teasers (#55 Girl Sports) with Teenage Dads and plenty of other festival artists taking spots across the countdown.

Up-and-comers Royel Otis will join Groovin The Moo alumni Ocean Alley and Amy Shark. BARKAA and Choomba will bring the grooves; Confidence Man are bringing the party, Teenage Joans are bringing the rock; The Chats are coming armed with some good fun and you can get your emo fix with Slowly Slowly.

The UK's Sophie May and Laurel join indie-rock royalty alt-J. Canada’s BBNO$ accompanies fellow rapper Denzel Curry (USA) along with LA-based singer-songwriters Omar Apollo and Slayyyter.

The festival will kick off at Wayville in SA on Friday 21 April before heading to Maitland, NSW on Saturday 22 April, Canberra, ACT on Sunday 23 April, Bendigo, Vic on Saturday 29 April, Sunshine Coast, Qld on Sunday 30 April, and Bunbury, WA on Saturday 6 May.
