Go Behind The Scenes With Eden Mulholland At His 'River Of Hurt' Video Shoot

The Brisbane troubadour will launch his new single at the end of next week

Brisbane-based performer Eden Mulholland is a busy man at the moment, having not only wrapped up a new distribution deal with Warner Music NZ but also recently releasing two new singles from his new album Hunted Haunted over the past little while — the New Zealand-exclusive cut The New Old Fashioned and the neon-soaked, jagged glee of River Of Hurt, for which the singer-songer also found time to put together an accompanying video clip.

Now, ahead of launching River Of Hurt at Black Bear Lodge next Friday night, Mulholland will be dropping into The Music HQ later today for a live Periscope session (5.30pm, be there), but before he does, he's very kindly given us a look behind the scenes of his recent River Of Hurt shoot, along with some candid thoughts and recollections about the experience.

It's an eye-opening look at a lesser-seen side of artists and the industry in general, so sit back and take it in, then check out the completed product with the full video — shot on location at Auckland's Viaduct harbour and Silo Park, directed by veteran collaborator Martha Jeffries and with cinematography by Eoin O'Liddigh — below.

What was it like working with Eoin O'Liddigh on this video?

Both Eoin and Martha are super laid back to work with. The shoot was unscripted so it was amazing to see Eoin respond so intuitively to Martha’s direction. Jamming ideas on framing and colour and light. Very cool. I mostly got to have beer and be annoying.

What inspired the idea for the video?

Originally Martha was inspired by the over-the-top glamour style of the new romantic music scene, neon, cocktails, pool parties, high fashion etc. We were going to have models in impossibly high stilettos lounging poolside, runway glamour shoot styles. But we both decided we needed to also depict the songs darker, grittier, more ‘human’ side. One where the feeling was about loss, contemplation and anger. Which lead us to make a more solitary, kooky Lost in Translation video. Much more tongue in cheek and colourful but with a sense of desperation.

Any interesting/funny stories to share on the shooting of the clip?

We stole another crews location! It was about 11pm on Saturday night in Auckland CBD and we were headed to a previously scouted location. On the way we passed a large concrete wall that was PERFECT for what we needed. Strangely the street was already cordoned off with cones and security guards, with what was obviously going to be quite a big-budget video shoot for something or other. We decided to be cheeky and risk setting up to shoot, not knowing if another crew was going to turn up any minute. As luck would have it, no one showed up and we got the shots we were after. And got to look like the sort of project that had budget for security and cones. Lolz!

Eden Mulholland will expand his live prospects to a national tour in October/November following the release of Hunted Haunted. For more information about his upcoming launch and any future dates, see theGuide or check The Music App.
