Literally out of nowhere

More Death Grips More Death Grips

A photo of a scrawled message on a napkin - that's how Sacremento, California-based experimental/industrial hip-hop crew Death Grips announced to the world that they would be calling it a day on the beloved cult project.

Although there have been the standard assertions from fans that it must all be a sick joke, the "band" (not their favoured descriptor) took to Facebook this morning (AEST) to officially (well, as officially as a napkin note can) spread the news.

Despite having scheduled gigs in the pipeline, including an appearance at November's incredible-looking Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas, Death Grips didn't beat around the bush in getting the message across, indicating that effective immediately, regardless of planned commitments, this is it.

"We are now at our best and so Death Grips is over," the post's transcription of the napkin break-up letter reads. "We have officially stopped. all currently scheduled live dates are canceled. our upcoming double album "the powers that b" will still be delivered worldwide later this year via Harvest/Third Worlds Records."

Death Grips - rapper Stefan Burnett (aka MC Ride), drummer Zach Hill, and producer Andy Morin (also known as Flatlander) - formed in 2010 and immediately made themselves known with breakthrough mixtape Exmilitary in 2011, which gained quick infamy for its brash blend of punk rock, hip-hop and industrial music.

They released two LPs in 2012 - the acclaimed The Money Store and No Love Deep Web - and a third, Government Plates, late last year. The first part of their forthcoming The Powers That B double album, Niggas On The Moon, featuring Bjork, was released online just last month.

And, for the road, something a little more traditional (if that's the word):
