Everclear’s Art Alexakis is officially a life coach.

The Santa Monica singer and songwriter recently attained his psychology degree and aims to “counsel with people”, he told Australian music journalist Bernard Zuel in a recent interview.

On why he’s chosen this new path (don’t worry, he’s still in music), Alexakis explained his psychological tools and life experience to connect with others.

“I’ve lived a lot of life, and I work mainly with creative people, people who make a living in the creative arts, but coaching is me helping you figure out how to reach certain goals,” he said.

Alexakis revealed that through the tools he’s amassed in life – fellowship, therapy, his psychology degree, and three years of “super intense” master life coach training, he’s found “wisdom”. And being a life coach and psychology graduate means more than holding a piece of paper: “You’re calling it being [a] resource; in my world, we call it being of service,” he told Zuel.

This isn’t the first time Alexakis discussed his new service as a life coach. In a Double J interview last February, the singer informed music journalist Dan Condon that he’d “just graduated from life coaching school”, with a year to go before he graduated from university.

“I went back to college in my 50s, and [soon] I'll have my psychology degree,” he said. Calling helping people “something I like to do”, Alexakis shared that he wanted to be doing something other than music as a safety net. As he’s been living with multiple sclerosis for many years, he’s also aware that “you never know” when he might need a wheelchair.

He continued, “Learning how to tour, how do you go into the studio sober if you've never done it before? How do you wake up in the morning, pay your bills, and have relationships?

"All that stuff is different for people who work in the creative arts, and it's really different when you spend your primary years growing up drinking and drugging.”

Art Alexakis is touring Australia with Wheatus frontman Brendan Brown next month in the team-up we never knew we needed. The tour will span a mighty 15 dates along the east coast, South Australia and Western Australia.
