Dan Sultan is celebrating the tenth anniversary of his third album, Blackbird, this April, and to commemorate the occasion, he’s releasing a limited-edition vinyl of the album.

The tenth-anniversary edition of Blackbird will arrive as a signed pressing re-invigorated with a stunning layout.

The album will be pressed on gorgeous transparent red vinyl with black dust scattered throughout. In addition to the re-release of Blackbird, Dan Sultan will perform songs from the album during a special one-off concert in NAIDOC Week this July.

Sultan will be accompanied by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO), which will be conducted by Noongar man Aaron Wyatt with musical arrangements from Alex Turley. Tickets to the once-in-a-lifetime event will be available from 10 am this Thursday, 29 February, via the MSO website. Sign up here to join the waitlist for early access tickets.

The concert will take place on Friday, 12 July, at Hamer Hall. In a press release, Sultan said about the re-release of Blackbird and his show with the MSO, “I loved the experience of making Blackbird. I spent two months in Nashville and worked with an incredible producer in Jacquire King and was able to take my band with me, Pete Marin and Josh Jones.

“We all had a wonderful time together and made something really special. It was a huge adventure and something I’ll always cherish. To bring this music to the MSO is a huge honour and a big challenge that I’m very excited about. I think we will make something very special once again.”

In a review of Blackbird for The Music, Danielle O’Donahue declared that the album was a “big step forward” for Sultan, adding: “This record is 100 per cent Australian. Like Paul Kelly and Tim Rogers before him, Sultan has always had a talent for writing about the Australian experience, giving his songs a real and lived-in sense of place.”
