Beloved Australian indie label I OH YOU has added to its esteemed roster of artists by signing up-and-coming NSW muso Alex Knight, aka Brightness.

The signing comes concurrent with the release of Brightness' debut single and video, Oblivion, a track that — to hear the man himself tell it — instantly grabbed I OH YOU founder Johann Ponniah by his very soul and left him in thrall to this new and unfamiliar beast, whose fuzz-lined indie gems were introduced to him over email one fateful night by his colleague, Tommy Faith. A chance live encounter as the support act for Oh Pep! later — also brought about by one of Ponniah's friends, Kurt Bailey — and he knew he couldn't ignore the rising artist any longer.

On his first listen to Oblivion, Ponniah says, "that was it — I was absolutely, positively hooked".

"Line and sinker, stick a fork in me, whatever overused analogy you want to throw in, it's all the same and I was all of them," he said in a statement.

"I think it was the tones of the guitars or Alex’s voice. The driving feel of the song or it could have been the lyrics that hit me so instantly. I shut my emails down, rid myself of all distractions and for the next 29 minutes I sat and listened to Brightness’ debut album. When it was finished, I scrolled to the top of the page and hit play again. This continued for the rest of the afternoon."

A successful face-to-face meeting followed these events, during which Ponniah and Knight canvassed all manner of topics, including histories, work experience, mutual loves and more, and — somewhat unsurprisingly, given the evident enthusiasm — the relationship is now official.

Brightness builds on I OH YOU's established talent for attracting next-level artists to their ranks, with the current cabal including the likes of Jack River, MOSSY, Green Buzzard, Montgomery, DMA's, Violent Soho, DZ Deathrays, City Calm Down and the recently returned Bleeding Knees Club.
