The sale of the handwritten lyrics for Bob Dylan's iconic track, The Times They Are A-Changin, could break a world record if the asking price is met.

According to Reuters, the one-page sheet of lyrics for the 1964-released protest song are being sold for $US 2.2 million. If the sale is successful, it would break the world record for a sale of song lyrics since Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone, which were sold at auction by Sotheby’s in New York in 2014.

The lyrics to The Times They Are A-Changin were previously owned by Dylan’s current manager, Jeff Rosen, and are now being sold by an anonymous private collector.

Owner of US autograph dealers Moments in Time, Gary Zimet, confirmed he was also selling lyrics from two other songs by the music legend - 1965's Subterranean Homesick Blues ($US 1.2 million) and 1969's Lay Lady Lay for $US 650,000).

“They are not quite as important, as iconic,” Zimet said.

"Subterranean Homesick Blues is certainly a major, major song but not in the same league as The Times They Are A-Changin."
