Blacken Open Air Festival announces 2022 lineup, first international headliner

American tech death titans, REVOCATION are making a 40,000 km return trip, nearly the circumference of the globe, to headline BLACKEN OPEN AIR FESTIVAL on the 29th July to 1st August 2022. HUGE.

This is a significant milestone for a festival that last year was dealt a near-fatal blow. After announcing a lineup that captured the imagination of the nation, momentum quickly built. Then, just ten days out, state borders slammed shut, abandoning all hope of the festival taking place and putting the organisers in a very tough spot. Pirate, from The Black Wreath organiser and owner of Blacken Open Air, said that “Last year’s devastation was lessened by the huge outpouring of support from the Australian community. We came very close to abandoning ship. But Blacken is the best gig in the desert. So we are back and giving it everything we’ve got!”

For event organisers, there is perhaps nowhere more difficult to pull together a festival this ambitious. But the extreme challenge, the distance, the adversity, is at the core of BLACKEN’s identity. Against all odds, BLACKEN returns with an even bigger, bolder and more brutal lineup.

Joining is Melbourne punk rock force, Amyl and the Sniffers. The ARIA award winning band have blown up internationally since last year's release of their second album Comfort To Me. They’re making their way to perform in the desert in between sold out shows across the globe. Australia’s biggest international death metal export Psycroptic, join New Zealand's Shepherd’s Reign, Aussie death metal pioneers Abramelin, and forty more bands from across the nation.
