Billy Joel wants to start a supergroup that could be beloved by all classic rock fans and one we imagine would be a joy to be a part of.

The Piano Man singer appeared on the Howard Stern show this week to promote his new music – his first in 17 years – and discussed who he’d like in a potential supergroup. “I thought about putting together a band: me, Don Henley, and Sting, and maybe John Mayer on guitar,” he said.

Stern brought up Paul McCartney and whether or not it would be possible to invite Joel’s good friend into the group, to which he replied, “He was in the super-est group of all time. I don’t have the nerve to do that.” On Ringo Starr, Joel added that he’s “a great drummer” and “He doesn’t get the credit he deserves.”

Maybe the supergroup will appear while Joel is on tour – Sting joins him as a special guest on 24 February in Tampa, then in San Diego on 13 April. Sting then accompanies Joel in St Louis (27 September), San Antonio (25 October) and Las Vegas (9 November). You can find Billy Joel’s 2024 tour dates here.

You can watch the interview with Stern below.

Earlier this year, Billy Joel returned with his first new song in 17 years, Turn The Lights Back On, an emotional, poignant and relatable track he does so well. It’s an instant classic ballad from one of America’s favourite artists.

To celebrate his comeback, Joel recently appeared at the Grammys for the first time since 2002 for an unforgettable performance.

Joel returned to Australia for a one-off performance at the MCG in December 2022. He was joined by special guest Tina Arena.

The Music reviewer Guido Farnell said Joel’s voice was “as commanding as ever” and that “age has not diminished his capacity to deliver a red-hot live show”.

Farnell added: “Tonight is a joyous celebration of Joel and his career. He is a consummate entertainer who has crafted a fine body of work that has been engineered to have the broadest possible appeal. Thousands of people leave the MCG beaming and looking very satisfied.”
