"Looking up to legends, who were also arseholes, admiring all the terrible things that they did."

More Ben Lee More Ben Lee

Australian legend Ben Lee has just released his new single Arsehole featuring Georgia Maq, lead singer and guitarist from Camp Cope.

The single is the first to be released off his forthcoming album I'm Fun, to which Lee said, “This album, this moment in my career, is all about balancing some hard-earned wisdom from a 30-year long career with the vigor and energy of youth.

"That’s why it was as important to me to collab with artists like Jon Brion and Money Mark who I’ve both known for over 2 decades, as much as people like Shamir and Georgia Maq who are young and lit up with creative adrenaline. I like being a generational bridge between freaky artists. They are my tribe!”

On the surface, Arsehole is a fun and comedic reflection for Lee, where he trails through the different ways he interacted in the world as a young person, contemplating how his actions made him into an 'arsehole'. Underneath, it houses a soft confessional and warm forgiveness that only comes with years of reflection. The song is packed with poignant lyrics that offer a reminder - in a way that only great music can - of the cosmic joke of living on a round ball flying through space. That is to say - sometimes we take things a little too seriously.

Where many artists might fail to truly grasp the wisdom and humility that comes with 30 years in the industry, Ben Lee captures the feeling perfectly, weaving the soft instrumental around repetitive and powerful vocals. Georgia Maq also lends her vocals, creating an energetic punch to an otherwise soft and wholesome single.

If Arsehole is a taste of what's to come from his new album I'm Fun, slated for release August 19, then audiences are in for a treat.
